You know those nights that feel like they were designed just for you?
It's perfectly quiet, and the sky is impossibly blue.
You can hear everything
and pay no mind to the things that might normally bother you.
Birds hum in rhythm and crickets sing their chorus
and trees loom soft and gentle overhead.
Life doesn't seem threatening, like it once did.
Light is warm in every direction.
There's not a soul about
except you and the family with the dog who sloppy licks your hands
and the daughter who says, hi, hi!
Cars pass by, but pay you no mind.
Gratitude washes through.
The peace of impossibly blue nightfall
bathes you.
The moon is hiding
and there's not a cloud in the sky and the blue shines
as though she’s being illuminated from everywhere
all at once.
Lightning bugs stay out
late in the season.
Lamps glow a hazy orange across the empty street.
An airplane buzzes overhead.
Gentle.
Everything is gentle.
Everything is quiet and sweet
and far too beautiful.
Trees massage your skin from six feet above.
You cross an open field,
dancing fireflies illuminate the silhouette of a doe.
She looks at you, runs into the forest.
You keep walking into the warm light
of the impossibly blue night.
